RK Handworked Carpets
Carpets from Rajasthan, India.

Carpets produced by the Bishnoi peoples of India's Rajasthan are beautiful examples of craftmenship. 100% handworked, they combine traditional designs created from organically dyed fibres. It is these thick woven carpets (traditionally called "dhurries") that alongside pottery and camel herding, support the life of the Bishnoi in a way of life that has remained little unchanged for centuries.

The woven carpets are produced for the Bishnois domestic living. The hard wearing pragmatic demands of rural life are enlivened with colorful designs that celebrate the fauna and flora of the countryside, providing heavy insulation for the cold desert nights. Geometric patterns are interspersed with representations of desert wildlife reflecting the Bishnoi's respect for nature. Each carpet is unique yet still following the patterns handed down through the generations. These intricately bold designs present a timeless balence of forms and colors and a glimpse of the culture and lifestlye of rural India.
