The Bishnois & Rajasthan

Rajasthan, in the north west of India, is the traditional home of India's Maharajas. But away from the fort towns and ever growing cities, that were once their palaces and strongholds, the life in the countryside goes on little changed by the demands of modern living or the influences of tourism. The Bishnois are famed for the hand woven carpets ( or "dhurries") they produce. They are a unique peoples following 29 principles of non-violence ( 29 meaning : "Bish-noi"!). These principles date back to the 15th century after a sect founded by a guru named Jambeswarji who preached respect for nature and fellow man. The Bishnoi are known for their reverence to wildlife and their careful environmental management. Their life is led in harmony with the environment. Most importantly they actively protect the indiginous species, especially the Blackbuck Antelope, from extinction.
